Disorders We Treat

Soft Tissue Masses

A new or growing lump is unsettling, but most soft tissue masses are not cancer. Dr. Talbert helps you find out exactly what it is and whether it should be removed.

Understanding The Diagnosis

Getting answers about a lump

A new or growing lump under the skin is unsettling, but most soft tissue masses, cysts, pilonidal cysts, lipomas, and enlarged lymph nodes, are not cancer. Still, any lump that is new, growing, painful, or unusual deserves to be evaluated so you know exactly what it is.

Some masses can simply be watched; others should be removed because they are painful, infected, enlarging, or recurring, or because pathology is needed to confirm the diagnosis. Pilonidal cysts near the tailbone, for example, often need surgical treatment when they keep coming back.

Dr. Talbert examines the mass, reviews any imaging, and recommends whether it should be removed, and, when appropriate, sends it for pathology so nothing is left to guesswork.

Common Questions

Answers from Dr. Talbert

A mass may need removal if it becomes painful, infected, irritated, grows larger, keeps returning, or causes cosmetic or functional concerns, or if testing is needed to confirm what it is.

Most lipomas are harmless, noncancerous fatty growths. Even so, any new, growing, painful, or unusual lump should be evaluated to confirm the diagnosis.

A biopsy may be recommended when a lymph node does not return to normal, has suspicious features, or needs to be tested for infection, inflammation, or cancer.
