Melanoma is a skin cancer that begins in pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. It may appear as a new mole or a changing spot on the skin, and it can spread to lymph nodes or other areas if not treated early.

Surgery may involve removing the melanoma along with a margin of surrounding tissue. Depending on the case, Dr. Talbert may also recommend a sentinel lymph node biopsy to help guide treatment.
