Hernias
A bulge, pressure, or discomfort that worsens with activity, hernias rarely fix themselves. Dr. Talbert recommends the repair that gives the strongest, most durable result.
A weak spot that rarely fixes itself
A hernia happens when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, often creating a bulge, pressure, or discomfort that worsens when you lift, cough, or strain. Hernias come in several forms, inguinal, umbilical, femoral, Spigelian, and complex ventral, each in a slightly different location.
Most hernias do not heal on their own, and many slowly enlarge over time. Some are little more than a nuisance; others carry a higher risk of becoming trapped, which is why certain hernias are repaired sooner rather than later.
Dr. Talbert examines the hernia, reviews any imaging, and recommends the approach, laparoscopic or open, with or without mesh, that gives the strongest, most durable repair for your situation.

Answers from Dr. Talbert
It may feel like a bulge, pressure, aching, or burning that becomes more noticeable when standing, lifting, coughing, or straining. Some hernias are painless and simply appear as a bulge.
Repair may be recommended when a hernia causes pain, grows larger, limits activity, or carries a risk of becoming trapped. A surgeon can determine the right timing based on the type and size.
Adult hernias usually do not close on their own. A surgeon can determine whether repair is needed based on size, symptoms, and risk.
